As of January 2022, downloading readable transcripts in paragraph form from Panopto is not available, but is a feature Panopto is working on for future release:
In the meantime, what follows is a work-around for creating transcripts from Panopto’s auto-generated closed captioning files.
1. Download the Captions File
Locate the Panopto video you’d like to extract a transcript from and click Settings.
In the video’s Settings dialogue box, select Captions. Click on the arrow beneath Available Captions: English (United States) to show the options, and select Download file. |
2. Clean Up the Captions File
Your download file will look something like this:
Next, we’ll use an online tool to make this raw, closed captioning text more readable.
In a web browser, go to subtitletools.com. Click on Choose Files and locate the file you downloaded in the previous step. Make sure Empty line between cues is checked, then click Extract text. On the following screen, click Download. The resulting text file, shown below, is much more readable. There is still some extra spacing you may want to clean up, but you now have a readable transcript. |
