Harmonize Assignments Using Rubrics: Canvas

This guide outlines how to create a rubric in Canvas but use Harmonize Discussion for your Assignment.

If you have created an assignment, students have submitted posts, and you want to add a Rubric after the fact, see Adding a Rubric after posts have been added to an Assignment below on this page for more details. Otherwise, read on.

Step 1: Create an assignment in Canvas as you normally would.

Step 2: Change the Submission Type to use External Tools and click find to search for Harmonize.

Step 3: Save the Assignment. The Assignment will now be using Harmonize for posts.

Step 4: When editing your Harmonize topic, the very first time you want to include a rubric you will need to click the Authorize Canvas Extensions button. You'll only have to do this once.

Step 5: Choose your rubric with the Set Rubric button.

If your instance of Canvas does not have the updated Harmonize>Canvas API link, you need a few extra steps:

Step 1: Create an Assignment using Canvas without linking to External Tools. Save the Assignment.

Step 2: Create the Rubric for that Assignment and add it to the Assignment as you normally would.

Step 3: Once the Rubric is created, click Edit on the Assignment.

Step 4: Change the Submission Type to use External Tools and click find to search for Harmonize.

Step 5: Save the Assignment. The Assignment will now be using Harmonize for posts.

When viewing the posts in Speed Grader the instructor will be able to see the rubric.
NOTE: Students will not have visibility to the rubric but instructors can view it in SpeedGrader.
