Setting up a Proctored Exam

Setting up a proctored exam is a one-step process:

  1. Proctorio will embed a checkbox to enable remote proctoring on your editing exam page. You  MUST have the Proctorio Extension installed in order to enable remote proctoring on an exam.

By enabling Proctorio, you will be able to set the Exam Settings (such as Record Video, Record Audio, and Lock Down features) and Behavior Settings (different flagging levels and their weights).

To enable Proctorio on your exam:

Canvas

  • In the “Quiz Restrictions” section, check the “Enable Proctorio Secure Exam Proctor” box.

Canvas New Quizzes

  • In the “Settings” tab, toggle on “Enable Proctorio.”

Important:

  1. Proctorio exams must be edited with the supported browser (Google Chrome, Edge, Opera, and Brave).
  2. All exams require a time limit.
  3. If an exam is published without Proctorio enabled and a test taker takes it, you will not be able to enable Proctorio on that particular exam.

When you enable Proctorio on your exam using the supported Internet browser, a hidden password will be generated automatically and filled in the password box. The password is shared with the Proctorio servers so that the test takers can only access the exam by utilizing the Proctorio Extension.

Also, embedded code will be added to the exam description field. The embed codes provide context for the test takers as to what to do when the exam begins. If they are not using the Proctorio Extension, the embedded code will hide the button for starting the exam and notify the test takers that Proctorio Extension must be installed before they can take their proctored exam.

This reduces confusion and prevents the test takers from reaching a password field and requesting the password/access code from their exam administrator.

Since the embedded code and password are critical, the supported browser with the Proctorio Extension installed must be used whenever creating or modifying exams.

The fields that are controlled by Proctorio will be hidden by the extension as this ensures that the LMS exam settings are in sync with the Proctorio exam settings.
